Part 1 of 4 Maps and map-less navigation and winter survival skills. Learn to navigate with compass & maps,as well without a compass & map. We will go back in time and travel by way of sun, moon & stars. Pay attention to the weather & tree patterns. Delve into the fundamentals of basic first aid with a focus on dehydration and hypothermia, and the importance of proper clothing, foot wear & staying dry.
Hand-craft your very own Nature Journal, play some awareness games and have a great time together. AGES 7 & UP
Part 2 of 4. Experience the forgotten ways of ancient fire crafts with Primitive Skills Instructor Mitch Post as you re-live history first hand. Learn to locate dry, useable fuel sources from the native materials available in the icy cold forest where we will be building various survival shelters.
We will be teaching about hypothermia, drowning, frostbite, cuts, breaks, burns and ways to protect ourselves from the elements as well as what you will need in your "Think Ahead Survival Pack". Team work and leadership will be an important part of this day.
Tom & Mitch will each build their own Survival Camp as a fun challenge and we will compare the differences between Modern & Primitive ways with a focus on LEAVE NO TRACE & Safety

Appetizer: Learning to locate and clean water using mother nature's trees, streams and many wondrous resources.
Main Course: Digging down in the snow for roots, grasses and frozen greens. Snacking on fried tree bark, fresh pine buds and sipping spruce tea.
Dessert: Foraging for insect larvae, grubs, worms and many other extremely nutritious and tasty treats.
We will learn about hygiene & proper building of latrines as well as ways to purify your water.
Learn how to use the snow to your benifit and why you NEVER eat snow!

Lost In The Woods: Are You Really Lost? Part 4 of 4

Where: Vallecito Lake
Description: Coping with the fear and psychological effects of being lost and getting home. Your ultimate goal is to get home, wether you make the trek home or what to be found. In order to do this you must STOP and CALM DOWN. Find out why fire is your friend and why waiting is the hardest part of being lost.
This is Graduation Day:
Everyone will make their own Survival Camp with a team mate and put their newly learned skills to the test. Remember your "Think Ahead Survival Bag."
A short ceremony will be performed for the parents and Certificates of Completion will be awarded!
